The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has reopened Route 600, also known as Nethers Road, in Madison County. This reopening follows emergency repairs addressing storm damage that rendered the road impassable in late May.
Heavy rainfall in the area led to washouts and erosion, resulting in the closure of Nethers Road. This route is significant as it provides access to the Old Rag Mountain trailhead in Shenandoah National Park. VDOT crews focused on stabilizing embankments, clearing debris, and restoring damaged sections of the roadway to ensure safety for travelers. The road is now accessible to all traffic.
Additionally, parking areas at the Old Rag trailhead accessed via Nethers Road were also affected by the storm. Repair efforts are ongoing, and visitors are advised to check the park’s website for updates.
For local updates regarding conditions within VDOT’s Culpeper District, information is available on X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.
Travelers can find current traffic conditions through VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras and other real-time travel information on the 511Virginia website. This information is also accessible via the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone within Virginia.
