Congressman Rob Wittman announced on Apr. 20 that the Secretary of the Navy has formally acknowledged his proposal to name the next Ford-class aircraft carrier, CVN-84, as USS Yorktown in recognition of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The issue is significant as it ties a major naval asset to a historic event in American history, potentially honoring both past victories and future military strength. The Secretary of the Navy described Wittman’s proposal as “a profoundly symbolic act” that would “bridge the birth of the republic with its future” and serve as “a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of the U.S. Navy.” The Secretary confirmed that Wittman’s recommendation “has been formally received” and “will be given full and earnest consideration.”
Wittman said, “Yorktown represents the moment our nation secured its independence — and the legacy of American strength that followed.” He added, “I’m encouraged that the Navy recognizes the significance of this proposal as we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary.”
The congressman had previously urged naming CVN-84 after Yorktown to honor both the decisive victory at the Battle of Yorktown and previous ships bearing this name during World War II. He said, “As we look to the next generation of naval power, there is no more fitting name to carry forward into America’s next 250 years.”
Rob Wittman is currently serving in Congress representing Virginia’s 1st district; he succeeded Jo Ann Davis in 2007 according to his official biography. He has held this position since then after earlier roles in state government as reported by Ballotpedia. Born in Washington, D.C., Wittman is now 64 years old and lives in Montross according to congressional records. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981 as noted by Virginia Tech Magazine.
Observers will be watching for further developments as consideration continues on whether CVN-84 will carry forward one of America’s most storied naval names.
