Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares has raised concerns about Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, a campaign co-chair for Jay Jones. Miyares claims that Descano has repeatedly declined to prosecute criminal cases, suggesting that voters should be wary of Jones if Descano is not fulfilling his duties.
“Once again, Soft Jay Jones’ campaign co-chair, Steve Descano, refused to prosecute, failing the people he took an oath to protect,” said Jason Stuart Redding Miyares, Attorney General of Virginia. “If he won’t do his job as the Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney, why should anyone trust his mentee @jonesjay to do the job of Attorney General?”
According to NBC Washington reporter Aimee Cho, federal agents and D.C. police detained a man on the National Mall after a brief struggle. The man, identified by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as David Perez-Teofani, reportedly shouted in Spanish during the incident, saying he was not a criminal and wished to be with his family. ICE said that Perez-Teofani had been previously arrested in Fairfax County in 2024 on charges of aggravated sexual battery against a minor under 13 years old. While ICE confirmed its involvement in the detention, it did not comment on the specific circumstances of the arrest.
Court records reviewed by NBC Washington indicate that the 2024 charges against Perez-Teofani were dropped through a “nolle prosequi” filing, meaning prosecutors opted not to pursue the case. The office of Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano has responded to inquiries regarding the dismissal, though further details have not been disclosed. ICE maintained that there are instances where “prosecutors refuse to prosecute.”
Jay Jones is running as a Democrat for Virginia attorney general against incumbent Jason Miyares. His campaign co-chair is Steve Descano.
Miyares, who serves as Virginia’s Attorney General and has experience as a state delegate and prosecutor, has emphasized public safety, support for law enforcement, and stricter penalties for violent crime and drug trafficking throughout his career.
