Liberty University’s Michael Lugiano concluded his sophomore season with a 47th-place finish at the 2026 NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship on May 31 in Carlsbad, California.

Lugiano completed the championship event with an even par total of 216 (72-71-73) at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which plays as a par 72 over 7,528 yards. Entering the final day, Lugiano aimed to be among the top nine individuals not on an advancing team to secure a spot in Monday’s last round of stroke play. He missed this mark by two strokes; those advancing finished at two-under-par 214.

During Round 3, Lugiano appeared well positioned after making three birdies in his first nine holes and turning at one-under-par inside the top 25. However, he encountered back-to-back bogeys early on his second nine before responding with a birdie at No. 4. Ultimately needing another birdie to advance, he closed with a bogey on his final hole and signed for a one-over-par round of 73.

The tournament marked the end of what was described as an outstanding sophomore season for Lugiano. He helped Liberty win its second Conference USA title and claimed an individual victory at the NCAA Corvallis Regional—becoming Liberty’s first individual qualifier for the national championship event. Liberty has now had representation in four of the last seven NCAA Championships: as a team in 2019, 2021, and 2022; and individually this year.

Lugiano ended his season with a scoring average of 70.61 across all rounds played, recording fourteen sub-70 rounds and playing par or better golf in more than seventy percent of his rounds (27 out of 38). For these achievements, he was named to both Conference USA’s men’s golf first-team all-conference squad and the PING All-Region East team.
