Beginning April 7, a segment of McDevitt Drive in Culpeper will be closed to through traffic for a project aimed at reconstructing the intersection with Route 3 (Germanna Highway) into a roundabout. The closure is contingent on weather conditions.
Local traffic will still have access to McDevitt Drive via Route 667 (Nalles Mill Road). A detour route will guide local and through traffic. Northbound Route 3 traffic can reach points north of the closure by traveling on U.S. 15/29 (James Madison Highway), exiting at Route 666 (Braggs Corner Road), and turning left onto Routes 666 and then 667. Southbound traffic will follow this detour in reverse. Both directions of Route 3 will remain open during construction.
The project, valued at $8.5 million under the SMART Scale initiative, aims to convert the current unsignalized intersection into a single-lane roundabout and add a new sidewalk along the southeast quadrant of the intersection near McDevitt Drive’s northbound lanes.
According to the press release, “A roundabout will improve safety at the intersection by eliminating left-turn movements across traffic traveling at speed on Route 3.” It also addresses sight distance issues caused by vehicles using the right-turn lane on Route 3 to turn onto McDevitt Drive.
The construction contract worth $2,996,983.80 has been awarded to Chemung Contracting Corp. of Mitchells, with a completion date set for December 5, 2025.
