VCU women’s soccer Head Coach Lauryn Hutchinson announced the elevation of Matt Freibaum to associate head coach in May 2026.
In the previous season, Freibaum contributed to VCU’s advancement to the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals. The team saw improvements in nearly every offensive statistical category and increased both overall and Atlantic 10 win totals compared to the prior season under the first-year staff.
VCU more than doubled its assist total from 11 to 24 over the course of the season and scored 23 goals, up from 15 in 2024. In goalkeeping statistics, the Rams made a total of 89 saves, including seven by field players. The team’s total of 82 single-season saves ranked eighth-most in program history.
Four Rams each recorded three goals during the campaign. A freshman led with six assists in her debut season. Under Freibaum’s guidance, eight players scored their first collegiate goals, with five achieving multi-goal seasons.
Earlier this spring, VCU’s second-year coaching staff announced their recruiting class for the upcoming season. The Rams will add six new players for the 2026 campaign, including five Division I transfers and one member of Costa Rica’s Women’s National Team.
Freibaum and his colleagues plan to build on their initial success as they prepare for next season. Further details about VCU women’s soccer schedule for 2026 will be released soon.
