Marshall defeated James Madison University baseball 9-0 on May 2 at Veterans Memorial Park during a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

The loss brings the Dukes’ season record to 19-26 overall and 9-14 in conference play, while Marshall improves to 21-25 overall and 11-12 in the Sun Belt. The game saw Marshall score runs in every inning except two, keeping steady pressure on the Dukes throughout.

James Madison’s offense was led by sophomore Jack Anderson and freshman Ryan Gocio, who each recorded two hits out of three at-bats. Despite these efforts, the team was unable to bring any runners home. “Reece Moody’s 18-game reached base streak was snapped, the longest by a Duke this season,” according to the team. Pitcher Griffin Madden delivered his longest outing of his career with three innings pitched.

Marshall began scoring early with a run in the first inning from a single into center field. In subsequent innings, Jack Smith hit a home run from ninth position in the lineup for Marshall’s second run. Additional runs were scored through fielder’s choices, singles, sacrifice flies, and another home run by Mason Onate in the seventh inning. Tyler Kamerer contributed four hits for Marshall as they extended their lead late into the game.

The teams are scheduled to meet again for their series finale at Veterans Memorial Park on May 3.
