Highway work in the Lynchburg District is scheduled for March 2-8, 2026, with road, lane, and structure closures planned across several counties. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) noted that weather or other issues could delay or cancel some projects. Motorists are advised to check current conditions by calling 511 or visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.

Throughout the district, crews will be engaged in bridge and guardrail maintenance, brush and tree cutting, pothole repairs, paving operations, drainage work, mowing, and roadside cleanup.

In Amherst County, Route 1202 (Lynchburg Avenue over Branch Harris Creek) remains closed due to bridge deterioration. A detour uses Brooks Street, Harrison Avenue, Francis Avenue, and Route 29 Business. There is no set completion date.

Appomattox County will see reconstruction on the Route 460 Appomattox Bypass (Richmond Highway). Westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane with a speed limit lowered to 45 mph starting March 2 if weather permits. Work is expected to finish by December 2026.

In Campbell County, the Route 711 (Clarion Road) bridge over Route 29 Bypass (Wards Road) is closed for repairs. Eastbound traffic detours via Route 29 South to the Route 714 interchange and then north; westbound traffic detours via Route 29 North to the Route 712 interchange and then south. On-ramps and off-ramps at the interchange remain open. Completion is anticipated in March 2026.

Also in Campbell County, an intersection improvement project on Route 29 (Wards Road) has led to closure of passing lanes in both directions from Route 699 (Gladys Road) northward for about half a mile. This project should conclude by September 2026.

Charlotte County’s Route 642 (Mossing Ford Road) bridge over Roanoke Creek is closed for replacement with a detour directing traffic around the site until its estimated reopening in December 2026.

Nelson County drivers on northbound Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway) over Rockfish River face single-lane travel and a reduced speed limit of 50 mph during ongoing bridge repairs through May 2026.

Pittsylvania County’s widening project on Route 311 (Harville-Saunders Parkway) will result in temporary lane closures using flagging operations until November 2027.

No new specific closures were reported this week for Buckingham, Cumberland, Halifax, Lynchburg city limits or Prince Edward counties beyond ongoing district-wide activities.

The Virginia Department of Transportation oversees these projects as part of its responsibility for building, maintaining and operating roads across Virginia to ensure safe transportation statewide according to its official website. VDOT manages one of the largest state highway systems in the United States with tens of thousands of lane-miles under its care (source). The agency also provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 (source).

VDOT serves as a state agency overseeing planning and construction efforts throughout Virginia’s road network (source). Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond (source).

For further updates on closures or delays due to weather or other factors affecting these projects across central Virginia counties served by VDOT’s Lynchburg District office—motorists can use resources such as https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.
