Highway maintenance and construction projects are scheduled across the Lynchburg District from October 6 to 12, 2025, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Weather or other unforeseen circumstances may delay or cancel some of the planned work.

District-wide, crews will be engaged in activities such as bridge and guardrail maintenance, tree and brush removal, pothole repairs, paving operations, mowing, drainage work, and roadside cleanup. These efforts will affect multiple counties including Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, and Halifax.

In Lynchburg city limits, repairs on the Route 460 (Richmond Highway) westbound bridge over Route 501/460 (Candlers Mountain Road) eastbound ramp will result in nighttime closures of the ramp starting October 6. The closures will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with detours directing traffic via Route 460 westbound to Route 29 (Wards Road), then back onto Route 460 eastbound. Lane closures on Route 460 westbound are also expected. The project is estimated for completion in November 2025.

Nelson County motorists can expect alternating lane closures on Route 6 (Afton Mountain Road) between Route 151 and Route 250 due to milling and paving through October 6. A full closure with detour was scheduled for October 3 if weather allowed. Bridge replacement work has closed Route 653 (Wilson Road) over the Norfolk Southern Railroad; reopening is anticipated by November 2025.

In Pittsylvania County, culvert replacement has closed Route 802 (Hodnetts Mill Road) between Cherrystone Lake Road and Dry Bridge Road until November.

Prince Edward County will see several ongoing projects: bridge repairs on the eastbound Route 460 Bypass over Briery Creek will reduce traffic to one lane beginning October 7; speed limits are reduced to 50 mph at a grade crossing west of Meherrin on Route 360 with crossover routing for eastbound vehicles; and traffic is reduced to one lane with temporary signals on Germantown Road over the Prince Edward Highway Bypass. All these projects have completion dates set for October or November this year.

Motorists are advised to stay informed about current road conditions by calling VDOT’s information line at 511 or visiting their website.

“Signage and message boards will notify and direct motorists along the detour,” VDOT stated regarding the Lynchburg bridge repair project.
