Highway work is scheduled across the Lynchburg District for the week of December 8-14, 2025, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Planned activities may be delayed or canceled due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check up-to-date information at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 511.
District-wide, crews will be engaged in maintenance and repair tasks such as bridge and guardrail work, brush and tree cutting, pothole repairs, paving operations, drainage repairs, mowing, and roadside cleanup.
In Campbell County, pedestrian improvements on Route 29 Business northbound near 7th Street may result in temporary shoulder or turn lane closures through December 2025. An intersection improvement project on Route 29 (Wards Road) will close passing lanes in both directions from Route 699 (Gladys Road) to just over half a mile north of that point; this project is expected to finish in September 2026. On Route 460 Business (Timberlake Road), nightly shoulder closures are planned near Enterprise Drive and Oakdale Circle for pedestrian crossing upgrades.
Charlotte County’s Route 642 (Mossing Ford Road) bridge over Roanoke Creek remains closed with a detour in place; reopening is anticipated in December 2026.
Nelson County’s Route 653 (Wilson Road) bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is also closed. The estimated reopening date is December 2025.
In Pittsylvania County, the Route 686 (Markham Road) bridge replacement has closed the road with a detour set up until January 2026. A road widening project on Route 311 (Harville-Saunders Parkway) will cause temporary lane closures using flagging operations through November 2027.
Prince Edward County drivers should note that traffic on Route 628 (Germantown Road) over the Rte. 15/460 Bypass is reduced to one lane with temporary signals and periodic lane closures on the bypass itself. The estimated completion date for this work is December 2025.
Other counties including Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Halifax, and Lynchburg city limits will see general district-wide maintenance activities as described above.
