Highway maintenance and construction projects are scheduled across the Lynchburg District from December 15 to 21, 2025, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The department notes that work may be delayed or canceled due to weather or other unforeseen issues. Motorists are encouraged to check current conditions by calling 511 or visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.

District-wide activities include bridge and guardrail maintenance, brush and tree removal, pothole repairs, paving operations, mowing, drainage work, and roadside cleanup.

In Amherst County, Route 1202 (Lynchburg Avenue) over Branch Harris Creek remains closed because of bridge deterioration. A detour is in place using Brooks Street, Harrison Avenue, Francis Avenue, and Route 29 Business. There is no expected completion date for this closure.

Campbell County will see pedestrian improvements on Route 29 Business northbound near 7th Street with possible temporary shoulder and turn lane closures through December 2025. On Route 29 (Wards Road), an intersection improvement project will close passing lanes in both directions between Route 699 (Gladys Road) and a point 0.6 miles north of Route 699 until September 2026. Nightly shoulder closures for pedestrian crossing improvements are also planned on Route 460 Business (Timberlake Road) near Enterprise Drive and Oakdale Circle.

In Charlotte County, the bridge on Route 642 (Mossing Ford Road) over Roanoke Creek is closed for replacement with a detour directing traffic; reopening is estimated for December 2026.

Nelson County’s Route 653 (Wilson Road) bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is closed for replacement at coordinates (37.703194, -78.870712), with reopening projected for December 2025.

Pittsylvania County has two ongoing projects: the bridge replacement on Route 686 (Markham Road), which has a road closure and detour until January 2026; and road widening on Route 311 (Harville-Saunders Parkway), where temporary lane closures managed by flagging operations are expected through November 2027.

For all other counties listed—Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Halifax—as well as Lynchburg city itself and Prince Edward County—the district-wide maintenance activities continue as described above.
