Highway work in the Lynchburg District is scheduled for January 12-18, 2026, with several road, lane, and structure closures planned. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advises that schedules may change due to weather or other factors. Motorists can access current information by calling 511 or visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.
District-wide activities will include bridge and guardrail maintenance, brush and tree cutting, pothole repairs, surface treatment and paving operations, mowing, drainage work, and roadside cleanup.
In Amherst County, Route 1202 (Lynchburg Avenue over Branch Harris Creek) remains closed due to bridge deterioration. A detour uses Brooks Street, Harrison Avenue, Francis Avenue, and Route 29 Business. There is no estimated completion date.
Campbell County will see several projects:
– On Route 29 Business (Main Street) in Altavista near the Food Lion shopping center entrance south of 7th Street, a sidewalk project will cause temporary shoulder and turn lane closures until spring 2026.
– The Route 711 (Clarion Road) bridge over Route 29 Bypass (Wards Road) will close beginning January 12 for repairs. Eastbound traffic will be detoured via Route 29 South to the Lynch Mill Road interchange then to Route 29 North; westbound traffic will use Route 29 North to Dearing Ford Road then return on Route 29 South. Ramps at the interchange remain open. Signage will direct motorists along detours. Work is expected to finish by March 2026.
– Passing lanes on Route 29 (Wards Road), from Gladys Road northward for about half a mile, are closed for intersection improvements through September 2026.
In Charlotte County, the bridge on Route 642 (Mossing Ford Road) over Roanoke Creek is closed for replacement with a detour in place until December 2026.
Pittsylvania County has two ongoing projects:
– Bridge replacement on Route 686 (Markham Road), which remains closed with a detour until January 2026.
– Widening of Route 311 (Harville-Saunders Parkway), causing temporary lane closures using flagging operations through November 2027.
Other counties including Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Halifax, Nelson, Prince Edward as well as Lynchburg city itself are scheduled only for district-wide maintenance activities at this time.
