John Reid, the Republican candidate for Virginia lieutenant governor, has urged Ghazala Hashmi to engage in debates, arguing that voters deserve direct comparisons of their records. Reid made this statement on the social media platform X.
“Ghazala is the only candidate in Virginia who REFUSES to debate,” said Reid. “Voters don’t appreciate that! Why won’t she debate like everyone else??? Anywhere. Anytime. The only requirement? A camera.”
Reid has prioritized debates in his campaign, asserting that Virginians should have the opportunity to evaluate candidates’ records and priorities through on-camera exchanges. On his Substack, he challenged Senator Ghazala Hashmi to meet “anywhere” and “anytime,” with the only requirement being a camera so voters can make informed judgments. He contrasts transparency with avoidance, emphasizing his support for restoring order in schools, expanding childcare access, protecting Right to Work laws, and fostering growth across Virginia.
According to Cardinal News, no debates are currently scheduled in Virginia’s lieutenant governor race. The outlet reported that Hashmi told Norfolk’s WTKR-TV she is not interested in debating her Republican opponent John Reid, even as early voting commenced. This lack of a debate forum distinguishes this race from others on the ballot and has become a focal point for Reid, who continues to accept interviews and advocate for side-by-side comparisons. The report highlights the timeline of offers and refusals and underscores the implications for voters as ballots are already being cast.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin commented on X, criticizing Hashmi’s refusal to debate and asserting that open forums would reveal policy differences he believes do not align with Virginia values. His post supports Reid’s call for public debates and indicates broader Republican backing for transparency in statewide contests. The governor’s involvement also raises the profile of the lieutenant governor race among independent voters and media outlets monitoring debate commitments and campaign accessibility during early voting periods.
Reid is an experienced communicator and broadcaster in Virginia who has served as a communications director in both the U.S. Senate and at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce—experience he cites as preparation for serving statewide. As a candidate for lieutenant governor, Reid focuses on parents’ rights in schools, economic competitiveness, childcare access, and defending Virginia’s Right to Work law.
