The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting on April 14 to discuss co-teaching strategies for special education and English learner students, address several policy updates, and hear reports from staff and student representatives.
The meeting covered important topics that affect both students with disabilities and English learners in the district. Staff from the Department of Student Services and the Department of Teaching and Learning presented collaborative efforts between the Division of English Learners and the Office of Special Education. Their presentation focused on supporting individualized needs through aligned guidance for these student groups.
During the Superintendent’s Report, it was highlighted that Loudoun Valley High School hosted over 500 students from 26 schools at a Special Olympics Feet Meet event. The report also mentioned a visit by a NASA astronaut to Meadowland Elementary School, as well as sustainability initiatives such as a food waste audit conducted by J. Lupton Simpson Middle School students.
Action items addressed by the board included adopting amended minutes from the March 5 special meeting, creating a Select Committee to oversee memorandum of understanding negotiations between Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS), Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), and Leesburg Police Department (LPD), as well as approving changes related to information distribution policies within schools.
Additional topics discussed were funding for other post-employment benefits, next year’s school calendar for Hillsboro Charter Academy, and support measures for pregnant students through proposed new policy. Community members also participated in person during public comment to share their perspectives with board members.
The meeting concluded after committee reports were shared by board members, with no new business introduced before entering into closed session.
