The Loudoun County School Board held a meeting on May 12 to discuss the fiscal year 2028 operating budget, review committee updates, and vote on several policy changes.

The meeting addressed important topics such as school funding, student activities, and employee recognition. The board’s decisions impact students, staff, and the broader school community by shaping educational programs and operational policies for the coming years.

During the session, members of the Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee presented updates on recent achievements and initiatives. The board then began its first work session focused on planning for the FY28 operating budget. Chair April Chandler was present along with most board members; Vice Chair Anne Donohue was absent.

Several recognitions took place during the meeting. Four employees were honored for their long-term service to Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS). The board also celebrated middle school intramural sports achievements in volleyball and basketball across all 18 middle schools this year. Numerous LCPS teams and individuals were recognized for winning Virginia High School League State Championships during winter sports season.

Brambleton Middle School staff shared details about performance-based supports aimed at helping students build social-emotional skills in classrooms. Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence reported that Kevin West will become Director of Elementary and Charter Schools, highlighted student participation in Amazon Girls’ Tech Day exploring STEAM careers, and noted over 300 future educators celebrated at a Teacher Cadet ceremony.

Among action items addressed by the board: an increase of $6.2 million to next year’s operating fund due to available state funding; adoption of Policy 4190 regarding Other Post Employment Benefits Funding; renewal of a contract with Fairfax County Public Schools allowing continued attendance at Thomas Jefferson High School with transportation provided; adoption of Policy 8115 concerning free admission eligibility; approval of Policy 8425 focusing on student-athlete extreme heat safety; endorsement of the Local Plan for Career and Technical Education Perkins Funds through 2027-2028.

Information items included discussion about proposed calendars for capital budgets from FY2028–FY2033 as well as an elementary school attendance zone change process in Eastern Loudoun Planning Districts. Board members offered committee reports before entering into closed session after discussing calendar options raised by Ms. Lauren Shernoff.
