Loudoun County Public Schools honored 21 employees as Employees of the Year during the School Board meeting held on April 28. The recognition covered both instructional and operational roles across the district.

The awards are part of an annual effort by Loudoun County Public Schools Human Resources and Talent Development to acknowledge staff members who contribute significantly to students, families, and the community. This year, more than 700 nominations were submitted by employees, parents, students, or community members in various categories.

Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence said, “At LCPS, our people are the foundation of our success and the driving force behind every student’s experience. This year’s honorees represent the very best of our school division – demonstrating excellence, care, and commitment to students, families and one another. In every role, they make a meaningful difference each day, and we are proud to recognize their impact and grateful for the example they set for our community.”

Eric Kursman from Blue Ridge Middle School was named Teacher of the Year as well as LCPS’s nominee for Washington Post Teacher of the Year in 2027. Kursman’s approach was highlighted with a quote: “Equally important is his commitment to building meaningful relationships grounded in affirmation and cultural sensitivity… These interactions demonstrate his belief that relationships are the foundation of learning.” Katie Johnson from Belmont Ridge Middle School received Principal of the Year honors along with nomination for Washington Post Principal of the Year in 2027. A parent described her leadership saying: “She has created a positive learning environment that has led to incredible student achievements… Whether stepping in to supervise lunch duty, assisting at carpool, or filling in for a teacher, she leads by example.”

Other awardees included Maria Emilia Proano (Elementary New Teacher), Erick Enciso (Middle School New Teacher), Bentley Chen (High School New Teacher), several Substitutes of the Year across different schools including Karen Pegan and Benjamin Nichols; Jessica Trigiani (Instructional Support Employee), Donna Vanik (Student Support Services Employee), Peggy Tyree (Professional Employee), Shakeba Friday (Bus Driver), Sharron Brent (Bus Attendant), Linda Pocasangre Lopez (Custodial Services Employee), Joey Berrios (Information Technology Employee), Charles Marcum (Professional Trades Employee), Brandon Sellars (Safety and Security Employee), Evelyn Ceballos (School Nutrition Services Employee), Anne Grazier twice recognized as Administrative Support Employee at Belmont Ridge Middle School; Shari Byrne as Clerk to the School Board.
