As early as late July, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a long-term single-lane closure on I-64 at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News. The closures are part of ongoing bridge rehabilitation work related to the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
The initial phase will see one center lane closed in both eastbound and westbound directions, reducing travel lanes from four to three. Motorists will navigate around the work zone using either two inside left lanes or one outside right lane. All remaining lanes will accommodate through traffic on I-64, but those needing to access exits 258A or 258B must use the outside right travel lane.
The eastbound traffic split is scheduled for implementation during the week of July 27, with westbound changes expected in early August. This configuration is anticipated to remain until fall 2025.
“This latest traffic pattern is the second of three phases of long-term, single-lane closures and traffic shifts on I-64 at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard,” VDOT stated regarding its efforts to facilitate construction activities.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution near work zones by adhering to speed limits and following posted signs and barriers. VDOT encourages drivers to utilize their free 511 Virginia traffic tools or Waze GPS app for real-time road conditions.
The HREL Newport News Segment Project spans approximately 11.5 miles along I-64, beginning just east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton and extending west past Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. For most of this stretch, existing HOV lanes will be converted into Express Lanes alongside general-purpose lanes.
