Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are set to introduce a series of long-term single-lane closures and traffic rearrangements on I-64 in Newport News. This development is part of the ongoing construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
The first phase involves closing one inside lane in each direction along I-64, reducing the traffic lanes from four to three. Traffic will be shifted towards the outside of the roadway. The closures are scheduled to begin at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard on May 5, and near Hampton Roads Center Parkway on May 11. These lane closures are planned to continue through summer 2025, with further phases introducing additional lane closures.
Overnight closures of the I-64 on-ramps from J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Hampton Roads Center Parkway will accompany the lane closures, occurring from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This entire process is expected to last until early 2026, though it depends on weather and schedule.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and stay alert to road signs in the areas affected by the work zones. VDOT encourages drivers to use tools like the 511 Virginia traffic services or the Waze GPS app for updated travel conditions.
This segment of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project spans approximately 11.5 miles on I-64, stretching from east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton to west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. It involves converting existing HOV lanes and some general-purpose lanes into Express Lanes, forming part of a larger 45-mile Express Lanes network on I-64. The project aims to address traffic demands in the region by providing more travel options and a reliable road network.
