The Lightfoot Park and Ride lot in York County has reopened after several months of reconstruction. The facility, located at 617 East Rochambeau Drive, was closed in June 2025 for upgrades and officially reopened on November 21.
Improvements to the lot include new asphalt pavement and markings for a total of 68 parking spaces, three of which are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Other enhancements consist of five new bike racks, updated parking signs, improved lighting, and a new stormwater management pond.
This renovation is part of the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project that began in November 2024. The project covers nine miles of roadway widening and pavement rehabilitation on I-64 from the New Kent/James City County line to about 1.15 miles west of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234). It also involves repairing, rehabilitating, and widening two bridges over Six Mount Zion Road on both eastbound and westbound lanes.
The overall I-64 Gap Widening initiative is divided into three segments—A, B, and C—which are being constructed as separate projects to improve travel between Richmond and Hampton Roads. The aim is to address congestion and safety by expanding approximately 29 miles of travel lanes along this corridor. Each direction will receive an additional third lane measuring twelve feet wide as well as ten-foot-wide paved shoulders. Currently, this section only has two lanes per direction but connects to areas with three lanes at both ends; this mismatch has led officials to refer to it as “the gap.”
The Segment C portion of the project is expected to be finished by late 2027.
