Starting June 23, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will temporarily close the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot in York County for paving and reconstruction. Located at 617 East Rochambeau Drive, this closure is part of a broader initiative to enhance transportation infrastructure.
The improvements will transform the existing gravel commuter lot adjacent to the I-64/Route 199 Lightfoot interchange. The project includes new asphalt pavement, markings for 68 parking spaces, three ADA-compliant spaces, five bike racks, updated parking signs and lighting, and a stormwater management pond. The enhanced Park and Ride lot is expected to reopen in late 2025.
This work forms part of the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project initiated in November 2024. This segment involves widening nine miles of I-64 roadway from the New Kent/James City County line to approximately 1.15 miles west of Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234). It also includes repairing, rehabilitating, and widening two bridges on I-64 over Six Mount Zion Road.
The I-64 Gap Widening projects are divided into Segments A, B, and C. Each segment functions as an independent project aimed at improving connectivity between Richmond and Hampton Roads by widening approximately 29 miles of travel lanes. This involves adding a third lane and paved shoulders in both directions to address congestion and safety concerns within “the gap,” which currently has only two lanes per direction compared to three lanes at its connecting ends.
The completion of the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project is anticipated by late 2027.
