Light snow is expected to begin falling during the morning commute on Monday, December 8, in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has advised travelers to prepare for potentially slippery road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, up to half an inch of snow could fall throughout the day in the Fredericksburg area and Northern Neck. The Middle Peninsula may see greater accumulation, with around two to three inches possible. Some areas may experience rain or a wintry mix before the snow arrives on Monday morning.
VDOT crews will start 24-hour emergency operations after midnight Sunday. “Crews and equipment will be ready to spread treatment materials or plow snow as needed when precipitation begins early Monday,” VDOT stated.
Travelers are encouraged to check current road conditions using 511Virginia by visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov, downloading the mobile app, or calling 511. Road conditions may be more severe south and west of the Fredericksburg District during this storm.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra travel time, increase following distance between vehicles, and slow down before crossing bridges and overpasses. Elevated structures such as bridges and ramps may become slick before adjacent roads.
VDOT also recommends keeping an emergency supply kit in vehicles at all times and offers additional winter driving resources on its website.
“Plan ahead now to adjust travel based on weather and road conditions,” VDOT advised.
