The Liberty Flames defeated the New Mexico State Aggies 7-4 on May 3 to complete a three-game sweep at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
This win is significant for Liberty as it marks their fifth sweep of the season and extends their winning streak to six games. The team improved its record to 18-6 in Conference USA play and 35-13 overall, while New Mexico State fell to an 8-16 conference record and a 19-27 mark overall.
Catcher Kyle Hvidsten hit a two-run home run in the second inning, giving Liberty an early lead that they maintained throughout the game. Left fielder Nick Barone led offensively with four hits, two runs batted in, a run scored, and a stolen base. A trio of pitchers—Bradley Zayac, Jackson Evans, and Cooper Harrington—held the Aggies to four runs across nine innings. Zayac earned his seventh win of the season after allowing two runs over five innings with five strikeouts. Evans contributed three innings of relief work before Harrington closed out the game for his ninth save.
Liberty outhit New Mexico State by twelve hits to nine and played error-free defense while the Aggies committed four errors. Shortstop Tanner Marsh had two hits and extended his hitting streak to twelve games; third baseman Jordan Jaffe also continued his own twelve-game hitting streak by singling in the third inning. Barone’s performance marked his first four-hit game this year and brought him up to fifty runs batted in for the season.
According to box score highlights provided by Liberty Baseball, center fielder Jonatan Clough and second baseman Aidan Lombardi each homered for New Mexico State while starting pitcher JT Price took the loss after allowing five runs over nearly five innings pitched.
Looking ahead, Liberty will return home for its final regular-season homestand beginning Wednesday against Virginia Tech at Worthington Field at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
