Layla Scott, a two-time first team National Junior College Athletic Association Division II All-American from Johnson County Community College, has signed with the Liberty women’s basketball team for the 2026-27 academic year, according to an April 20 announcement.
Scott is the sixth and final member of Alexis Sherard’s first recruiting class as head coach. The new group also includes transfer Sophia Gregory and incoming freshmen Peace Ashina, Trinity Holsinger, Kendyl Smith, and Amari Worsham.
During her time at Johnson County Community College, Scott helped lead her team to a remarkable 69-2 record over two seasons. This included winning the NJCAA Division II national title in the 2024-25 season and securing third place nationally in 2025-26. She was named Most Valuable Player of the NJCAA Tournament as a freshman after scoring 25 points and making six three-pointers in the championship game against Pima.
Scott became Johnson County’s first player to earn first team NJCAA Division II All-America honors in both her freshman and sophomore years. Over two seasons she averaged 16.6 points per game, finishing with a total of 1,178 points. She also recorded averages of 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per game during her junior college career. Scott achieved twenty games with at least twenty points scored and set a personal best of thirty points in one contest.
Head Coach Alexis Sherard said: “We’re excited to welcome Layla Scott to Liberty. She’s a proven winner with a championship background and has developed into an elite scorer, leading her team and knocking down 118 threes last season. Just as important, Layla is strong academically, grounded in her faith and brings a quiet confidence with a great personality. She’s a perfect fit for our program, and we’re excited for what’s ahead.” Ben Conrad from Johnson County Community College added: “We’ve had 40-plus Division I players here, but I’m not sure anyone has ever impacted our program over two years like Layla. Liberty is getting a highly skilled shot maker and a fantastic young lady.”
