Beginning March 8, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement single lane closures on LaSalle Avenue from North Armistead Avenue to Michigan Drive. This measure is part of the ongoing construction for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment.
Traffic will remain open with one lane in each direction, while all ramps stay accessible except for the southbound LaSalle Avenue on-ramp to I-64 east, which remains closed. The closures are expected to last through summer 2025 as crews work on replacing the I-64 overpass at LaSalle Avenue. Access to businesses will be maintained during this period.
Motorists are advised to consider using I-664 as an alternative route and exercise caution around work zones. They should obey speed limits, follow lane markings, and stay alert to digital signs while avoiding distractions.
VDOT recommends using their free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app for real-time road conditions before traveling. The VDOT’s 511Virginia.org website and mobile app provide updates on construction, traffic incidents, congestion, and weather impacts.
The HREL Newport News Segment Project covers approximately 11.5 miles on I-64 from just east of LaSalle Avenue in Hampton to west of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News. For a majority of this segment, existing HOV lanes will be converted into Express Lanes alongside general-purpose lanes. Between I-664 and LaSalle Avenue, one general-purpose lane will become an Express Lane in each direction.
