As early as Sunday, July 20, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a series of weekly continuous single-lane and ramp closures along a portion of Interstate 95 north in Sussex County. This is for shoulder and roadway paving.
A section of nearly 2.5 miles on I-95 north, from approximately 2 miles north of Route 631 (Jarratt Avenue/Henry Road) at exit 20 to 1 mile north of Route 645 (Owen Road) at exit 24, will be reduced to a single lane from 8 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Friday each week. All northbound lanes on I-95 are scheduled to reopen for weekend travel. These weekly closures are planned to continue through the summer until this paving work is complete.
As part of the work, multiday closures of the I-95 north on- and off-ramps at Route 645 (exit 24) are also planned with signed detours in place.
During the closures, motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes such as Route 301 north from I-95/Route 631 (exit 20).
This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.
