Paving work on Interstate 81 southbound near exit 39 in Smyth County is scheduled to take place next week, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The operations will occur both during the day and at night in the Seven Mile Ford area.

Drivers are advised that there will be continuous lane closures from Monday at 6 a.m. on October 13 through Wednesday morning, October 15. VDOT urges motorists to watch for signs and message boards as traffic will alternate between the right and left lanes throughout the project.

Travelers should expect delays due to slow or stopped traffic, and local drivers are encouraged to use alternative routes to avoid congestion. Weather permitting, VDOT anticipates that paving will be finished by October 15.
