Construction to replace the dock at Jones Creek Landing in Richmond County, managed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), is now scheduled to begin in July 2026. The start date was previously set for winter 2026 with an expected opening in spring, but VDOT stated that more time is needed for design work. As a result, construction will commence in early July and the dock is projected to reopen for public use in late September 2026, depending on weather conditions.

Equipment and materials will be mobilized near the site starting mid-June. The new dock will closely match the size of the existing structure and will include a kayak launch on its downstream side.

The replacement project has an estimated cost of $300,000 and will be funded through state bridge maintenance funds. Construction will be carried out by VDOT state forces.

The current dock, originally built in 1932, was closed on July 18, 2023 following an underwater inspection that found it unsafe for public use until a replacement could be constructed. Closure signs and fencing have been installed and will remain until the new facility opens.

VDOT is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining transportation infrastructure across Virginia, including roads, bridges, and tunnels. The agency oversees one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country and provides services such as traffic management and road condition information (official website).
