Jay and Carolyn Marsh have been recognized with the George Mason Medal, the highest honorary award given by the George Mason University Board of Visitors, according to a May 14 announcement. The medal honors individuals whose service reflects the character and commitment of George Mason, a Northern Virginia native known for his influence during the Revolutionary War.

The recognition is significant because it celebrates those who demonstrate a lifelong dedication to public good and leadership, values embodied by George Mason himself. The medal is presented at Commencement as a mark of special distinction for recipients whose lives mirror this spirit of service.

The Marshes together dedicated about 90 years to George Mason Athletics before retiring in 2021. Their careers had an impact on generations of student-athletes, coaches, and staff at the university. Carolyn Marsh began her career in December 1975 as a sports information assistant before becoming executive assistant to the men’s basketball program. She worked closely with eight head coaches over several decades and was known for her compassion toward student-athletes, maintaining lifelong relationships with many even after they graduated. “Caring for the players like a mother” was how she described her role.

Jay Marsh started his connection to George Mason as a student-athlete after serving in the U.S. Army. He earned his degree in business administration in 1973 while playing two seasons of men’s basketball. Returning full-time to athletics operations in 1976, he spent nearly five decades overseeing facilities, events, fundraising efforts, and providing leadership within athletics administration. Jay also managed external events such as the Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament and contributed during notable moments like the women’s soccer national championship win in 1985 and men’s basketball’s Final Four run in 2006.

Their contributions extend beyond their professional roles; they established an endowed scholarship for basketball student-athletes and supported facility improvements such as locker room renovations. The men’s basketball film room now bears Carolyn’s name as recognition of her impact on campus life.

Married since 1967 until Carolyn’s passing in 2025, Jay and Carolyn Marsh are remembered by colleagues for their loyalty and commitment to building community at George Mason University—a legacy that continues to inspire.
