Defender Javier Sánchez, a recent graduate of George Mason University, has signed his first professional football contract with FK Jerv in Norway, the university announced on May 6.
Sánchez described the signing as an important achievement. “[Signing my first professional contract] meant a lot,” Sánchez said. “At the end of the day, that was one of my main goals, since I’ve always wanted to be fully dedicated to football. When I heard about the offer, I was the happiest guy in the world.”
George Mason men’s soccer head coach Rich Costanzo praised Sánchez for his contributions to the program. “Javi has made a huge impact on the program from day one,” Costanzo said. “His leadership and quality pushed the program forward to where it is today. He is a true competitor, professional, and winner. We are grateful for everything that he has done for the program and wish him well at the professional level, it is well deserved.”
During his time at George Mason, Sánchez played in 39 matches with 38 starts over three years and recorded four goals and four assists while serving as a key leader on defense. In 2024 he earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team honors and was named to Virginia Sports Information Directors Second Team Defense after starting all matches that season.
Before joining George Mason, Sánchez played at University of Charleston where he received NCAA Division II Men’s All-America Team honors following his performance in 2022.
Reflecting on his decision to join George Mason and later pursue opportunities abroad, Sánchez said: “When I talked to Rich, he explained to me what he wanted to do with the program…I wanted to go to George Mason and make big things.” He also credited his experience at George Mason for preparing him both mentally and physically for professional play: “The coaches helped me a lot…They showed me how important it is to take care of your body…and stay disciplined.”
Sánchez highlighted how joining FK Jerv would allow him not only athletic growth but also personal development through exposure to new cultures: “At the end of the day you come into a new country…I think it would be a good opportunity to see the world and meet new people.” Looking ahead, he encouraged current players at George Mason by saying: “Stay patient and trust the process…The players who keep working…usually give themselves best opportunity to succeed.”
