The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may face intermittent service outages between approximately 2 p.m. and midnight on March 16 due to severe storm conditions forecast for the region, according to a statement from the Virginia Department of Transportation. The anticipated weather includes strong winds, heavy rainfall, and higher-than-normal tidal levels, which could impact ferry operations.

These possible disruptions are important because high water levels and strong winds can prevent the safe operation of loading ramps on the docks. If ferry service is reduced or suspended, operations will resume as soon as it is safe to do so. Motorists are advised to plan for potential delays and check for updates before traveling.

Travelers are encouraged to call the ferry hotline at 800-VA-FERRY (800-823-3779) or visit the 511 Virginia website for real-time status updates on ferry service. Alternate routes have been provided for those traveling between Surry and Jamestown in case of prolonged outages.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels across Virginia to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system. VDOT manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles statewide according to its official website. The agency also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website.

VDOT serves as a state agency overseeing planning, construction, and maintenance of roadways, bridges, and tunnels throughout Virginia according to its official website. The department has evolved since its origins in the 1906 State Highway Commission to manage an expanding transportation infrastructure according to its official website. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.

Motorists seeking additional travel alerts can follow @VaDOTHR on X (formerly Twitter), visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov online, call 511 by phone, or download the free Virginia 511 mobile app.
