James Madison University’s men’s basketball program announced on Apr. 23 the addition of freshman guard Ashton “Ace” Meeks to its team. Head Coach Preston Spradlin said Meeks, who is from Bowie, Maryland and attended DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, will have four years of eligibility at JMU.

Meeks is a 6-foot guard and has been recognized as the third-highest ranked commit in program history according to 247Sports. His high school career included scoring a total of 1,729 points and earning First Team All-Met and All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honors for two consecutive seasons.

As a senior at DeMatha Catholic, Meeks averaged 22 points, four rebounds, four assists, and one-and-a-half steals per game. He was a varsity contributor for all four years of his high school career and was the first recruit for head coach Mike G. Jones in 2022.

In his sophomore year, Meeks led DeMatha to win the Maryland Private High School State Championship in double overtime and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

“Meeks comes in as a highly decorated player from the DMV,” Spradlin said. “A scoring point guard who has competed at the highest level of prep basketball, he will be the kind of guard that our fans are accustomed to seeing here at JMU. His quickness, shot-making ability, and competitiveness were qualities that drew our staff to him last summer, and we are excited to add him to our team.”
