James Madison defeats USF to win American Conference lacrosse championship

James Madison University defeated the University of South Florida 17-7 in the American Conference Championship at FirstBank Stadium on May 2. The Dukes secured their second consecutive conference title with a strong performance in Nashville.

The win highlights James Madison’s dominance throughout the game, as they controlled both offense and defense. Kaitlyn Carney and Brianna Mennella combined for 11 goals, scoring six and five respectively. Payton Root contributed with one goal and five assists, while Olivia Matthews added a goal and two assists.

Defensively, Reese Cuviello led with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Olivia Rongo also contributed two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Abigail Beattie started in goal for James Madison, making five saves over the full match.

USF was led by Sofia Chepenik, who scored three goals and had two assists. Natalie Eastwood played all 60 minutes in goal for USF, making five saves.

The game saw James Madison take control early after trailing briefly in the first quarter before scoring five straight goals to lead 6-2. The Dukes maintained their advantage through each quarter, opening up an eight-goal lead by the end of the third quarter and finishing strong in the fourth.

Mennella achieved a career high with her five goals during this match, reaching her 100th career point as well. Root has recorded four or more points in twelve games this season. Jordan Peterson leads James Madison with forty-three goals on the season.

James Madison will learn its postseason destination during the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Selection Show scheduled for Sunday, May 3 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
