James Madison University baseball lost to George Washington University, 5-4, in a 10-inning game on May 5 at Barcroft Park.

The game was the Dukes’ final midweek matchup of the season. The loss brought James Madison’s record to 20-27, while George Washington improved to 18-29 and ended a seven-game losing streak.

Josiah Seguin led James Madison at the plate with three hits in four at-bats, including a home run. He scored once and drove in two runs. The three-hit performance matched his career best and marked the tenth time he has recorded three hits in a single game.

James Madison started strong by loading the bases with walks and scoring three runs in the first inning on singles from Seguin and Clay Thompson. George Washington answered with an unearned run in the second inning after an error. In the seventh inning, Seguin hit his seventh home run of the season to give JMU a 4-1 lead. However, George Washington tied it up in the eighth inning after stringing together doubles and singles following two outs.

In extra innings, George Washington put runners on base with a single and hit by pitch before advancing them on a sacrifice bunt. After recording one out via strikeout, James Madison committed a fielding error that allowed GW to score for a walk-off win.

Game notes show that small ball remains effective for James Madison this season: they have totaled 59 sacrifice hits and stolen 132 bases so far—marks that are first and tied for fourth respectively for single-season program records. Luke McGrath made his first career start as pitcher for JMU, throwing two innings which matched his career high. The Dukes now hold a record of 3-2 in extra-inning games this year and are 1-2 when games end on walk-offs.

Looking ahead, James Madison will return home for its final series of the season against No.12 Southern Miss at Veterans Memorial Park from May 8 through May 10.
