Motorists traveling on Interstate 81 in the areas of northern Augusta County and southern Rockingham County should prepare for temporary ramp closures at exit 235 (Weyers Cave/Grottoes). These closures are part of the ongoing I-81 Corridor Improvement Program (CIP), specifically related to the truck climbing lane project. Closures will occur from Monday night, April 14, to Thursday night, April 17, during overnight hours.

The truck climbing lane project aims to introduce a third lane in each direction within the existing median between mile markers 234.1 and 237.9. “The truck-climbing lanes, part of the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program, are being constructed in an area with steep terrain in both directions,” explained a program representative. This project facilitates the movement of slower commercial vehicles to the right, minimizing interference with vehicles in the main travel lanes.

Currently, preparation and installation of lane shifts and barriers are ongoing. “Motorists should expect alternating left and right shoulder and some single-lane closures,” stated the program. Most northbound and southbound closures will occur on separate nights, generally from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., with a reduced speed limit of 60 mph during the project’s duration.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $61.4 million contract to Branch Civil Inc. The project is anticipated to finish by late 2027. Additional improvements include widening two bridges and enhancing I-81 and Route 256 interchange at exit 235.

The I-81 CIP involves many projects aimed at boosting safety, easing congestion, and promoting economic growth. More than 65 construction and operational enhancement projects across Virginia are part of this $3 billion initiative. “Find out more at Improve81.org,” the organization encourages, with online resources including interactive maps and detailed project information.
