Improvements to the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Rollins Drive/Westgrove Boulevard in Groveton have been completed, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced on June 3. The project was designed to enhance pedestrian and driver safety as well as improve traffic operations at the intersection.
According to the department, upgrades include new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and a pedestrian refuge island at the southern end of the intersection. The crosswalks on Fort Hunt Road and Rollins Drive were realigned for better visibility, curb ramps were upgraded to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and a channelizing concrete island was constructed on the Rollins Drive side, making it right-in/right-out only. Additional improvements involved new pavement markings, updated signage, and enhanced drainage systems.
The total cost for these improvements was $500,000, funded through state and local sources. The Virginia Department of Transportation said these changes are part of ongoing efforts to increase safety for all road users in Fairfax County.
