Drivers in Botetourt County are being advised of possible lane closures as work begins on an intersection improvement project at Route 460 (Orange Avenue) and Route 658 (Laymantown Road). The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) started the project today, with weather permitting.
On March 5 and 6, nighttime lane closures will occur for pavement marking operations to prepare for barrier wall installation. As construction continues, nighttime lane closures on Route 460 will take place Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Laymantown Road will also have lane closures Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and again from 3:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Motorists are encouraged to pay attention to signs and traffic control devices while using caution in the work zone.
Later this year, Laymantown Road is scheduled for closure at this location during the summer, beginning no sooner than May 21. A detour will be provided during this period.
The project includes adding a right turn lane on westbound Route 460 for drivers turning onto Laymantown Road. Completion is expected by late summer of 2026.
