Construction has started on improvements at the I-95 Exit 160 interchange at Route 123 in Woodbridge. These improvements aim to enhance safety, operations, and bicyclist/pedestrian mobility, as reported by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The planned improvements consist of replacing the northbound Route 123 loop ramp to southbound I-95 with a signalized left-turn to the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95, widening the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 from one to two lanes, moving the Route 123 and I-95 Express Lanes ramp intersection slightly south, and realigning the southbound I-95 ramp to northbound Route 123. Additionally, a shared-use path will be added along northbound Route 123 from Annapolis Way to Devils Reach Road. The beams and deck of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road will be widened and replaced.

During the construction phase, daytime lane closures will occur outside of peak travel hours on weekdays, and overnight lane closures will be implemented along southbound I-95 from Route 123 to Occoquan Road, Route 123 between Devils Reach Road and Annapolis Way/Monroe Drive, and Occoquan Road between Deerfield Lane and Devils Reach Road. Pedestrians on Occoquan Road may experience closures on sidewalks around the I-95 overpass and are asked to follow detour instructions as necessary. Single-lane closures for clearing and grubbing activities are taking place on Route 123 and southbound I-95 and are expected to continue for two more weeks.

A “pardon our dust” meeting regarding project construction is planned for summer, with more information to follow.

The I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project costs $76 million and is funded by federal and state sources. Construction, including the bridge over Occoquan Road, is anticipated to be completed in late 2027, with the entire interchange improvements project expected to be finished by late 2028.

Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when traveling through active work zones and to be alert to new traffic patterns. Traffic, work zone, and incident information is available online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov, via the 511Virginia mobile app, or by calling 511 within Virginia.
