Motorists in the Richmond area are being urged to use caution due to ongoing icy and snow-covered road conditions, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The agency reports that surfaces appearing wet or shiny should be considered potentially icy and slick. Drivers are encouraged to delay travel until conditions improve.

VDOT crews in the Richmond District continue to plow and apply treatments such as salt and abrasives where necessary. Interstates and limited-access roads have been cleared, while primary routes have largely been addressed. Crews are now monitoring these roads and shifting their focus to secondary streets and neighborhood areas.

For those who must travel, VDOT recommends checking weather forecasts and current road conditions before leaving. Motorists can access updated information using VDOT’s free mobile 511 app, visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or dial 511 within Virginia for real-time traffic updates.

The department advises drivers who must be on the road to exercise extreme caution by reducing speed, allowing extra time for commutes, and maintaining several car lengths behind snowplows or treatment trucks. Special attention is recommended when driving over bridges, ramps, overpasses, curves, and shaded sections of roadway.
