Winter weather is expected to continue creating hazardous driving conditions overnight in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula following recent snowfall. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has warned that wet pavement left by melted snow and slush could refreeze, leading to icy patches on roads.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 p.m. tonight until 1 a.m. Saturday, December 6, for Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline counties. The advisory warns of freezing drizzle that may result in a light glaze of ice on roadways, especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and ramps or roads with lighter traffic. Fog is also expected to reduce visibility for motorists during the night.
VDOT advises drivers to delay travel if possible until conditions improve or to proceed with extreme caution if travel is necessary. “Drivers should reduce speed and allow extra travel time to avoid being rushed. Add following distance between vehicles,” the department stated.
VDOT crews will be monitoring roads overnight for icing and will apply salt and sand as needed to state-maintained roads to improve traction and reduce ice formation.
For up-to-date road condition information, VDOT encourages travelers to check the 511Virginia service at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov or use the mobile app before starting any trip. VDOT also reminds drivers to keep an emergency supply kit in their vehicles at all times.
