All lanes of Interstate 95 northbound at mile marker 115 in Caroline County reopened on May 30 following an earlier multi-vehicle crash, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Earlier in the afternoon, two lanes had reopened while one lane remained closed for ongoing crash response. The detour at exit 110 (Ladysmith) was lifted as crews worked to clear congestion, but travelers were advised to expect residual delays with a single lane closure still in effect.
Northbound delays began before exit 104 (Carmel Church), and motorists were encouraged to monitor updates through the Virginia 511 system. Travelers were also reminded that alternate routes such as Route 207/Route 301 northbound could be considered during major incidents affecting I-95 traffic flow.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., all I-95 northbound traffic was detoured at exit 110 due to the crash, with vehicles redirected onto Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and then onto Route 1 northbound before re-entering I-95 at exits further north. Both I-95 and alternate routes experienced significant travel delays as a result of the incident.
The Virginia Department of Transportation operates one of the largest state highway systems in the country, managing tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia and providing services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, according to the official website. The agency oversees planning, construction, maintenance, and land-use permits for roads throughout the state from its headquarters in Richmond.
The Virginia Department of Transportation developed from the State Highway Commission established in 1906 into its current form overseeing roadways statewide. Its mission centers on building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels for safe transportation throughout Virginia.
