Paving work is planned at the Atkins Rest Area on southbound Interstate 81 in Smyth County, with the closure scheduled for Monday, August 4, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. The rest area is located at mile marker 53.

The temporary closure will allow crews to complete paving operations. Travelers heading southbound on I-81 are advised to make alternate plans and use other safety rest areas or truck parking during this period.

The department notes that the paving schedule could change depending on weather conditions. Drivers are encouraged to check electronic message boards for updates about the closure.

“BRISTOL – Weather permitting, paving is scheduled for Monday (August 4) from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Atkins Rest Area, located on southbound Interstate 81 at mile marker 53 in Smyth County.

This paving will require the rest area to be closed temporarily. Southbound I-81 travelers should plan accordingly and consider alternative safety rest areas and truck parking.
