The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Route 33 at Exit 247A will be closed on Wednesday. The closure, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., is necessary for the installation of a drainage structure.

Digital message signs and detour route signage have been set up to inform drivers about the closure and guide them along alternate routes. Southbound motorists seeking access to eastbound Route 33 are advised to use Exit 247B, then follow a detour via South Carlton Street, Reservoir Street, Eveleyn Byrd Avenue, and Burgess Road before returning to Route 33.

All work is dependent on weather conditions and may be rescheduled if needed.

VDOT encourages travelers to stay informed by dialing 511 or visiting the 511 Virginia website for current traffic alerts and travel information. The VDOT Customer Service Center operates around the clock to assist with hazard reports, service requests, or transportation-related inquiries at 800-367-7623 or through its mobile-friendly website.

For further updates, residents can follow VDOT Staunton District on Facebook and X, as well as statewide social media accounts. Additional news releases, travel tips, and project updates are available on the VDOT website.
