The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the off-ramp from southbound Interstate 81 to eastbound Route 33 at Exit 247A in Harrisonburg will be closed for paving operations. The closure is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, and continue until 4 p.m. on Friday, December 19. This work is part of an ongoing project to reconstruct the interchange and build a new exit ramp.

During the closure, drivers traveling southbound on I-81 who need to access eastbound Route 33 are advised to use Exit 247B. From there, motorists should turn left onto South Carlton Street, then left onto Reservoir Street, followed by another left onto Evelyn Byrd Avenue, and finally a left onto Burgess Road to return to Route 33.

Digital message signs will notify drivers about the ramp closure. VDOT notes that all construction work depends on weather conditions and schedules may change accordingly.

“The Route 33 project is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Additional information is on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s project page.”
