The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on March 26 that the northbound right lane of Interstate 81 near Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County will be closed from 8 p.m. Monday, March 30, through 7 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, to allow for guardrail repairs.

The northbound off-ramp onto Route 11 at Exit 180 will also be closed during this period. These closures are necessary so crews can repair guardrail that was damaged in a tractor trailer crash earlier in the week. All work is dependent on weather conditions and schedules may change.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Customer Service Center operates around the clock to help roadway users report hazards, make service requests or get information about Virginia’s transportation network. The public can access these services through VDOT’s mobile-friendly website or by calling their hotline at 800-367-7623.

VDOT manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to the official website. The agency provides highway maintenance and traffic management services such as Virginia 511 and oversees land-use permits along state routes according to its official site.

VDOT serves as a state agency overseeing planning, construction and maintenance of roads, bridges and tunnels throughout Virginia according to its official website. The department has developed from the original State Highway Commission formed in 1906 into its current structure managing an expanding transportation infrastructure as noted by VDOT. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to VDOT.
