A safety project on Interstate 81 in Frederick County will begin August 25 and continue through the end of 2025. The $3.1 million initiative involves installing high-tension cable barriers between northbound and southbound lanes along a 20-mile section of the highway. The aim is to reduce collisions caused by vehicles crossing the median into oncoming traffic.
Drivers traveling this stretch of I-81 should expect overnight left lane closures at various points between mile marker 304.9, just north of the truck weigh stations, and mile marker 324.9 near the West Virginia state line. Contractors will start work on the northbound side before moving to southbound lanes.
Work is scheduled Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., and Sunday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., weather permitting.
