Detour signs have been installed on Interstate 81, westbound I-64, and Route 262 in the Staunton area. This initiative is part of a research study led by the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The purpose of these signs is to guide motorists during traffic incidents on I-81 when there is a directional closure requiring a detour. They may also be used for planned work that necessitates an overnight temporary interstate closure.
The green-and-white signs are labeled “Emergency Route A” or “Emergency Route C.” Digital message boards along I-81 or westbound I-64 will inform drivers of closures and direct them to follow Route A for southbound closures or Route C for northbound closures. These emergency routes will guide traffic onto and around Route 262, between I-81 exit 220 and exit 225.
This installation is part of a VTRC/VDOT study aimed at assessing the efficiency of using permanently installed emergency routing signs for managing traffic. The study will analyze traffic incident data, as well as volumes and speeds before and after the signs’ installation.
