Overnight lane and exit-ramp closures are planned for southbound Interstate 81 near Staunton during the final two weeks of July 2025. These closures will allow crews to place beams for bridge widening at two locations in the area.
From July 22-24, the right lane of southbound I-81 will be closed nightly from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. near mile marker 221. The ramp from southbound I-81 to eastbound I-64 at exit 221 will also be closed during these hours. Motorists needing access to eastbound I-64 should detour via Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) north and Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway). The ramp from Route 250 onto southbound I-81 will also face closures each night, with detours available via northbound I-81.
On July 30-31, the left lane of southbound I-81 will close nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. near mile marker 225 for further bridge-beam placement over Lewis Creek.
Digital signs will inform motorists of closures and detours, but all work is weather-dependent and schedules may change.
These efforts are part of a larger project aimed at adding an additional lane in both directions between exits 221 and 225 as part of the Interstate 81 Corridor Improvement Program (CIP). In March 2023, the Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $101 million contract to Kokosing Construction Company Inc., with completion expected by summer 2027.
The CIP includes nearly $4 billion in projects designed to enhance safety and reduce congestion on I-81 in Virginia. Additional details can be found at Improve81.org.
Other ongoing projects within VDOT’s Staunton District include truck-climbing lanes near Weyers Cave and widening efforts in Strasburg, Harrisonburg, and Winchester areas.
