The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced upcoming ventilation upgrades at the I-77 Big Walker Mountain Tunnel in Bland County. The work will take place between mile markers 47 and 49, and is expected to cause nighttime delays for motorists throughout August.

According to VDOT, during the initial phase of construction, ventilation improvements will be made in the northbound tube. From August 10 through August 29, both northbound and southbound traffic will be escorted through the southbound tube nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.

Once the upgrades in the northbound tube are complete, crews will begin work on the southbound tube. At that time, traffic escorts will shift to the northbound lanes while ventilation work continues in the opposite direction.
