The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced nighttime lane closures and traffic stoppages on I-66 at the Rosslyn Tunnel. These are scheduled for Monday, May 5, and Tuesday, May 6, as part of the tunnel rehabilitation project.
On Monday night, westbound I-66 between Exit 73 to Route 29 (Langston Boulevard to Rosslyn and Key Bridge) will experience single-lane closures from 10:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day. Intermittent traffic stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes each are expected between 11:59 p.m. and 4 a.m.
For eastbound I-66 on Tuesday night, single-lane closures will occur between Exit 73 to Route 29 (Rosslyn/Key Bridge) from 10 p.m. until 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Similarly, intermittent traffic stoppages are planned between 11:59 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Drivers should anticipate significant delays and are encouraged to consider alternate routes during these times.
The ongoing rehabilitation project aims to improve the Rosslyn Tunnel, which carries I-66 under North Nash Street, Fort Myer Drive, North Lynn Street, and Gateway Park. Built in 1983 and nearly a fifth of a mile long, the tunnel is undergoing several upgrades including:
– Removal of the tunnel ceiling for better maintenance.
– Replacement of loose or damaged ceiling tiles.
– Electrical system upgrades.
– Installation of a new fireproofing system.
– Repairs to steel beams, abutment and pier concrete, joints.
– Cleaning and repairing bearings.
– Replacement of the tunnel lighting system.
The project is set for completion this summer.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through active work zones by being alert to new traffic patterns and minimizing distractions.
