Contractor crews working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are set to implement full overnight closures on I-64 west in Hampton starting as early as September 3. The closures, which will last up to four hours each, are necessary for overhead sign installations associated with the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project.
The affected stretch of I-64 west runs from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) to North Armistead Avenue (exit 265). All lanes in this section will be closed overnight beginning at 12:01 a.m. and reopening by 4 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, and Thursday, September 4. A backup date is scheduled for September 5 if needed due to weather or other delays.
Signed detours will guide drivers from I-64 west to Woodland Road/Settlers Landing Road and North Armistead Avenue so they can access the on-ramp back onto I-64 west. During these closures, the on-ramp from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road to I-64 west will also be closed. Eastbound travelers on Settlers Landing Road will be rerouted via Woodland Road, East Mercury Boulevard, Old Buckroe Road, returning to Woodland Road, Settlers Landing Road, and North Armistead Avenue before accessing the interstate.
Additional single-lane closures leading up to the full closures are planned as early as 10 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 3.
Periodic closures and detours are expected throughout the summer and fall for further overhead sign work. VDOT will provide advance notice before future full closures.
“Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.”
VDOT recommends that drivers check road conditions using its free 511Virginia website or mobile app before traveling through construction areas.
This construction is part of Phase 4C of the HREL Hampton Segment project. It involves converting three general purpose lanes in both directions into one Express Lane, one part-time Express Lane, and two general purpose lanes per direction between Mallory Street (exit 268) and LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A). The project also includes widening I-64 by adding a new travel lane in each direction over two miles; repaving existing lanes; replacing two eastbound bridges over the Hampton River; widening and rehabilitating the westbound bridge; work on six mainline bridges; and improving a pedestrian underpass.
Once complete, this segment will join a continuous high-occupancy toll Express Lanes network extending about forty-five miles from Newport News’ Denbigh Boulevard through Chesapeake’s Bowers Hill interchange (project details). The dynamic tolling system is intended as a long-term strategy for managing congestion while providing more travel options for drivers in Hampton Roads.
